For his fourth release on Leo Records, Russian saxman Alexey Kruglov takes a big leap forward, ambition-wise… and executes a perfect landing. Identification features a single 65-minute composition, performed by Kruglov’s own Krugly Band (previous records featured more ad hoc groupings), here in a trio format consisting of Dmitry Denisov on bass and Vladimir Borisov on drums. A trio? It often sound like more than that, but that’s because Kruglov varies his sax techniques and also plays piano and prepared piano. “Identification” is a strong piece, with lots of room for improvisation, though just cohesive enough, and full of changes. Very impressive.
