Since the days of the Cold War, way back when it was revolutipnary act, Leo has documented the new music scene in Russia. On "Seal of Time" Kruglov leads a 5tet through three tracks of a live date in St.Peterburg, and then the same group in two earlier cuts from the TEF studio in Moscow. Kruglov plays all the reeds, and a bit of flute, but mostly alto sax with an acidic bite to his tone, through there is some sweet soprano and some strong baritone work (reminiscent of Actis Dato) on "The Battle" with its march beat. Pianist Dmitry impresses throughout with his ability to provide an harmonic frame for the music while always coloring outside the lines. "Seal of Time" is exciting energy music deep in Free tradition of the Ganelin Trio. It reminds us that the Russian music scene is as challenging and free as ever. Definitely worth a listen.
